As I’ve been speaking, people ask me how they can help, what they can do, to unite a nation, and world, that sometimes seems so divided. Here’s what I tell them:

1. Invite a person of another culture to your home.
2. If a person from another culture moves into your neighborhood, throw them a welcome party (I did this a few years ago for an Indian neighbor.)

3. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or start a conversation in this PC era we live in.
4. If you see someone from another culture being harassed, strike up a conversation and ignore the people harassing them.
5. Read. Travel. Write. Engage.

6. Stay engaged politically. Choose your causes wisely so your voice is paid attention to by your representatives.
7. Volunteer for your literacy council. Teach an immigrant to read. Look at their resume. Mentor them.

8. Reach out to organizations fighting phobia of other cultures and ask how you can help. Or donate to them.
9. Host evenings for many different cultures and discuss viewpoints.
10. I always say: “When I see something, I say something. What I’ve seen lately is discrimination against other cultures. So I’ve been saying something.”

11. Be courageous. Don’t live in fear. Live in hospitality and spread your light on the dark places.
12. Don’t give in to social media and fake news. Find–and live–your own truth. Speak your own truth.
